Who couldn’t use a little extra cash? In this digital age, using the Internet to supplement one’s income has become extremely popular. Everyone and anyone can make money online if they are armed with a computer, a valuable skill and a bit of creativity.

But here’s the thing, when reading the terms “making money online” most people will think one of two things: click-to-earn scams or blogging.

I’m not gonna lie, this kind of annoys me. If I could get a dime for every raised eyebrow I’ve gotten when I mention “making money online” …well I’d be ready to go on vacation next month!

First, we’re in the digital era!! If traditional businesses have been able to make money from their online stores for years now, why not me, or you?! Yes, there are scams everywhere, online or not, but making money online doesn’t have to be a scam!

Then, there’s the other response: “Oh yeah, I hear bloggers are making money now.” Well, yeah, they are! And no need to roll your eyes when saying that because there are plenty of serious, professional bloggers out there making money from their hard work.

However!! Blogging is not the only way to make money online without resorting to sketchy stuff. In fact, chances are blogging is not quite for you, especially if you’re only looking for extra money to supplement your current income. You know why? Because blogging is not just writing your heart out and cashing in!

Blogging is a business! It requires patience, focus, and both financial and mental investment to make it a viable stream of income.

So, if blogging is starting to sound a little scary to you, or you’re simply looking for extra income, not a full-blown business, here are 10 simple things you can do online to earn some extra money without a blog:

Quick note: This list is meant to be as general as possible. I don’t want to limit you, just give you general ideas of what you can do. That being said, if you’re interested in making money online, you should read my last post 3 Question to Answer Before Trying to Make Money Online.

It will help you identify your likes and dislikes, as well as your skills. The 10 ideas to make money online that I show below can loosely match some of those skills and likes you identified from my previous post.

10 Ways to Make Money Online Without a Blog

Top 10 Ways to Make an Online Income:

1) Sell your stuff online:

This had to be the first here because it’s the simplest, easiest way to make extra money online. Do you have a lot of stuff lying around that you no longer need or use? Sell it online!

I’m not talking about posting on Kijiji or Craigslist (although these can be good choices too). I’m talking about major players in the online marketplace, much like eBay or Amazon.

You must know by now, that eBay became the biggest sensation for auctioning used or collector’s items. You can find everything for sale there, from cars and jewellery to used shoes and toys. You can set up a free account with eBay and list your items.

Now, I’m usually that gal who, when everyone is going crazy about the latest big thing – be it an app, a website, or what have you – I go try it and say “Um… I don’t get it!” So, quite honest here, I cannot speak extensively about how you can make money on eBay because I find it very confusing.

I can, however, talk about Amazon because I have been able to sell some of my books from when I attended university. More specifically, I’m talking about the Amazon Sellers Central, where you can sell your items, both used or new!

I mean, if you have stuff you’re not using, why not sell it to someone who needs it? It’s that simple!

2) Take Online Surveys:

Answering online surveys is becoming increasingly popular. The surveys range in length and variety of topics, and you don’t need special skills to get paid to answer questions. It is usually relatively quick and easy to sign up, and you can start taking surveys immediately.

There are plenty of survey panels to sign up for (it’s free) and start earning some extra bucks on the side. But if I were to pick just one I would sign up for Swagbucks.

With Swagbucks, you can do much more than just answering surveys, but their survey section is excellent as they have both their own survey platform and Peanut Labs – another great survey panel.

Full disclosure here: a big portion of my online income, right now, comes from answering surveys, so I’m not giving bogus info here. I do make extra money from this method, even a big portion of my online income, right now, comes from answering surveys, so I’m not giving bogus info here. I do make extra money from this method, every month!

3) Teach a Virtual Class:

Do you have a unique skill or talent that others would pay to learn? You can teach a class or become an online tutor. Clients are looking for teachers for every possible skill, from singing and speaking another language, to tutoring mathematics and cooking.

Online courses and tutorials have become super popular in the last few years, and I’m pretty sure we have YouTube to thank for that. Even universities and colleges have come on board, investing and expanding their e-course platform.

Now, universities will ask for degrees to be eligible for a position as a professor or instructor (as they should). But, if your expertise comes without a degree, you can set up an online course with platforms like Udemy.

You can teach in any niche you can think of – play the guitar, writing, photoshop techniques, social media marketing, etc. All you need is to have essential knowledge that people want to learn about.

4) Become an Online Freelancer (E-lancer):

Most likely you have employable skills that can be transferred over to any company you work for in your lifetime. These would be things like writing, entering and managing data, graphic design, etc. Why not make use of those skills outside of your 9-5 job?

There are a handful of e-lancing platforms where you can offer your services, but the only one that has worked for me so far is UpWork. Formally oDesk, Upwork is a global platform that connects clients and workers. Set up a free account, complete your portfolio and start applying for jobs on Upwork!

Heads up: Upwork is a bidding site, so you need a stunning portfolio and to brush up on your proposal-writing skills. You will be competing with tons of freelancers, so you need to stay competitive.

5) Write an E-book:

E-books have been extremely popular for quite some time now, as an alternative to traditional publishing. These digital books can be about any possible topic you can think of, and lengths vary from 5000-10 000 words to 50 000-75 000 words for longer novels.

While I recommend this option for the writers at heart, not every e-book author is a writer (it’s the same in the traditional publishing industry, don’t kid yourself). Authors range from business people to motivational coaches, to even accounting experts. There are many ways to write your own book, so don’t feel intimidated.

Once you’ve written your e-book, you can publish and sell it through Amazon Kindle and start seeing the $$ signs pouring in. Keep in mind that for maximum profits you’ll need to invest some time (and maybe money) in promoting your fresh-from-the-oven e-book.

6) Create and Sell an App:

Are you super tech-savvy? Do you have a great idea for a web app? Create an app and put it online to sell!

One place you can list your apps for sale is with Flippa – a marketplace for selling and buying domains, websites and apps.

If you don’t have killer tech skills, you can still pitch your idea to companies, such as Google or Apple, and get royalties if they accept and develop it.

7) Work at Mechanical Turk:

Mechanical Turk is an online marketplace run by Amazon. With Mechanical Turk, you can sign up for free and make money by completing small jobs, or tasks, for the companies seeking help on the site.

I wasn’t sure if I should include this one here because I have only been able to make a few cents with Mechanical Turk. However, I have read plenty of articles about it as well as interviews with people who make a substantial amount of money with Mechanical Turk. For instance, this article is about how Mike Naab has earned over $20,000 on MTurk in only 3 months.

I thought that I owed it to you to list it. It’s a legit micro work platform, but you might want to read up on ways to do it successfully. I also recommend you read this article about Mechanical Turk, for a better understanding of how to make it work for you.

8) Sell Your Crafts on Etsy:

Are you creative and handy? Do you enjoy making things? You can advertise your products and sell them on Etsy!

If you are a crafty person, this is an excellent way to create an income while making things with your hands and engaging in your favourite hobby.

With Etsy, you can sell crafts in a variety of categories, from cute handmade knitted hoodies to wedding gift favours, to even patterns for fashion designers to use. It really is about what you like to do and are good at.

Like crafts but your skills are not quite there yet? No worries! I recently read that now Etsy also lets you sell craft supplies for handmade/DIY projects. So, you don’t need to make anything, you can just package crafts supplies and sell it there. I’ve been considering doing this, myself!

9) Become an Affiliate Marketer:

Selling products online doesn’t always have to be about selling products you have created yourself! The online market is huge and super competitive, so coming up with something completely new that caters to some segment of the market that is a risky and arduous feat.

The upside of that is that there are plenty of products out there that can be promoted and sold! Instead of creating your own product from scratch, you can promote other people’s products.

The choices are endless, and you can find almost any kind of product in any niche you can think of. Start by going over anything that you have bought online in the past. Anything that really resonated with you? Anything that you gladly share with your friends anyway? Well, I bet there is a niche for it out there! You should find if there is an affiliate program for it as well!

There are two ways to approach this: You can either sign up for an Affiliate Network like Pepperjam, SendOwl, or you can go directly to the company where you bought the product and sign up for their individual affiliate program if they have one.

Then, the trick is knowing where to share it, how and when. For that, there is plenty of information online, but you can start with House of Brazen’s e-book, How to Make Your First Affiliate Sale. I just started reading this e-book, and so far, I’m impressed! I will have a full review on it soon.

10) Sell Photos Online:

If you love taking photos and are quite good at it, you can put your skills to use and sell your photos online through marketplace sites like Shutterstock and iStock Photo.

You’re piling up all those photos anyway, why not turn a profit with them?

To start out, you can just go through all the photos you have and pick the best ones. Use your regular editor features to improve the quality, if you need, and start listing them on stock photo marketplaces.

Prices and terms vary from site to site, so you want to make sure you read the terms first. Some sites pay a flat rate; others pay a percentage of the sales.

I have only rounded up a handful of my photos (I get lost going through all of them), but I listed the few with 500px. You can check my profile here to have a feeling for it.

I was surprised with how quickly I started getting likes on 500px – it’s a nice self-esteem booster too!

10 Other Ways to Make Money Online Without a Blog

The possibilities are near endless for someone who’s willing to invest a little time into making money online. What’s best is that none of the above requires you to have a blog or do sketchy things! You also don’t need to start a whole business online to make money.

All you need is some creativity, determination and a computer!
